Work & Travel USA: Luggage Handler in Fairbanks, Alaska

Imagine starting your workday with the Alaska Range on the horizon and finishing it under a sun that barely sets. HAP Fairbanks Transportation Division is looking for energetic university students to join their hospitality team as Luggage Handlers for the summer-to-fall season. This is one of the most sought-after Work & Travel placements in the USA — great pay, guaranteed tips, and a front-row seat to America’s Last Frontier.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Luggage Handler, you are the first friendly face guests meet when they arrive in Fairbanks. Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Loading and unloading guest luggage from motorcoaches, shuttles, and railcars
  • Sorting, tagging, and delivering bags to hotel rooms and pick-up points
  • Assisting travelers with directions, arrival information, and a warm Alaskan welcome
  • Keeping luggage storage areas organized, safe, and clean
  • Working closely with drivers, front desk, and tour staff to keep arrivals and departures running smoothly

Why Fairbanks, Alaska?

Fairbanks is the gateway to the Arctic and one of the most unforgettable places to spend a season abroad. In summer you’ll experience the famous Midnight Sun with up to 21 hours of daylight — perfect for hiking, kayaking, and exploring after your shift. As fall arrives, the tundra turns gold and the skies come alive with the first Northern Lights of the season. On your days off, visit Denali National Park, soak in the Chena Hot Springs, cruise the Chena River on a riverboat, or meet sled dogs and reindeer up close. Fairbanks is small, friendly, and full of international students just like you.

Pay & Benefits

  • $17.00 per hour — well above the typical Work & Travel wage
  • Tips included — luggage handlers regularly boost their earnings with guest gratuities
  • 35 hours per week, with the possibility of extra hours during peak arrivals
  • Long summer-to-fall season — more weeks of work means more savings and more travel money
  • Hands-on experience with a major U.S. hospitality and tourism operator
  • A supportive team environment with fellow international students

What We’re Looking For

  • University students aged 18–25 enrolled in the Work & Travel USA program
  • Good physical condition — the role involves standing, lifting, and moving luggage throughout your shift
  • Conversational to good English and a genuinely friendly, guest-focused attitude
  • Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Flexibility to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Availability for the full summer-to-fall season
