Live Your Alaskan Summer Adventure

Imagine waking up to snow-capped peaks, breathing crisp mountain air, and finishing your shift with a hike to a waterfall or a stroll along a historic Gold Rush boardwalk. That’s everyday life in Skagway, Alaska — and it can be your Work & Travel USA story this summer.

HAP Holland America Skagway Inn is looking for energetic university students to join the team as Housepersons from summer through fall. If you’re organized, reliable and love being part of a fast-moving international team, this position is a fantastic way to earn, travel and grow.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Supporting the housekeeping team by delivering clean linens, towels and guest supplies to rooms and floors
  • Collecting and transporting laundry, trash and recycling to designated areas
  • Keeping hallways, lobbies, stairwells and public areas spotless and welcoming
  • Restocking housekeeping carts and storage rooms
  • Assisting with light maintenance requests and moving furniture or equipment when needed
  • Responding to guest requests with a friendly, can-do attitude
  • Working closely with housekeepers, front desk and management to keep the Inn running smoothly

Why Skagway?

Skagway is one of Alaska’s most iconic destinations — a small, welcoming town of wooden storefronts and Klondike Gold Rush history, framed by towering mountains and the deep blue waters of the Inside Passage. During the summer season the town buzzes with cruise ship visitors, seasonal workers from around the world, and endless daylight.

On your days off you can ride the legendary White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, hike the Chilkoot Trail, kayak among glaciers, spot bald eagles, bears and whales, or take a road trip across the border into Canada’s Yukon Territory. Few Work & Travel locations offer this much raw natural beauty.

What You’ll Get

  • $16.00 per hour — a strong, stable wage
  • 40 hours per week guaranteed schedule
  • Season from summer to fall — one of the longer Work & Travel placements
  • Employment with Holland America Princess (HAP), a respected international hospitality brand
  • Real hospitality experience for your CV and future career
  • An international team of colleagues and friendships that last long after the season ends
  • Access to some of the most spectacular scenery and outdoor activities in North America

Who We’re Looking For

  • University students aged 18–25 eligible for the J-1 Work & Travel USA program
  • Conversational English — enough to understand instructions and greet guests
  • Good physical stamina: you’ll be on your feet, walking, lifting and pushing carts
  • Reliable, punctual and detail-oriented
  • Positive team player who enjoys helping others
  • Ability to commit to the full summer-to-fall season
  • Previous hotel or cleaning experience is a plus, but not required — full training is provided

Good to Know

Tips are not part of this position, but the hourly rate is designed to reward your work directly. Skagway is a remote town, so plan for a season of nature, community and adventure rather than big-city nightlife — most participants say it’s the best decision they ever made.

Places in Alaska fill up fast. Apply today and make this the summer you’ll talk about for the rest of your life!

About Alaska

Alaska is the ultimate Work & Travel adventure - glaciers, Denali, midnight sun and untouched wilderness. Most students work in remote lodges, national-park resorts and on tour boats, earning some of the highest summer wages in the country.
